What is Fly Ash?
Fly Ash is a fine, powdery byproduct captured from the flue gases of coal-fired power plants using electrostatic precipitators or similar collection systems. It consists primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), and calcium oxide (CaO), in proportions that vary depending on the coal source and combustion conditions.
Composed of spherical, glassy particles — generally finer than ordinary Portland cement — Fly Ash improves workability when used in concrete. When combined with water and calcium hydroxide released during cement hydration, it reacts pozzolanically to form additional cementitious compounds, contributing to long-term strength gain and reduced permeability over weeks and months.
